Specialist Library

The reference library of the Pázmány Péter Catholic University Institute of Archaeology holds more than 10,000 volumes, primarily supporting the Institute’s teaching activities, doctoral programme, and research projects.

The collection is composed of three main components:

  • Core academic holdings aligned with the Institute’s general teaching requirements
  • Specialised volumes supporting research on the Near East
  • Donations and scholarly estates, including contributions from faculty members, researchers, and deceased scholars

When acquiring contemporary academic literature, the Institute follows a strategy of careful optimisation. Works already accessible to students through major collections—such as the Hungarian National Museum Central Library and the specialised libraries of the HUN-REN Research Centre for the Humanities (including the Institute of Archaeology and the Institute of History)—are only purchased in justified cases.

Available resources are instead prioritised for acquiring publications that:

  • are not accessible through online databases, and
  • are not available in major domestic research libraries,
  • yet are essential for teaching and research work

The growth of the collection has also been significantly enriched by the scholarly legacies of prominent researchers, including Lívia Bende, István Bóna, István Fodor, and Jürgen Deininger.

Location

The library is currently located in the Sophiamum building, on the 4th floor (Rooms 414–415).
